With 3D Graphic Statics, slab design focuses on the structural efficiency and form-finding of flat or curved surfaces that carry loads. The method visualizes the flow of forces through a slab, allowing for optimized material distribution and structural performance. By leveraging this approach, designers can achieve lightweight yet strong slabs, balancing tension and compression forces.
The design process involves creating a force diagram, where forces are represented as vectors, and adjusting the slab’s geometry to align with these forces. This not only enhances stability but also minimizes material use, leading to more sustainable architectural solutions. In modern construction, such slabs are often integrated with innovative materials and fabrication techniques, including additive manufacturing, further optimizing their form and function.
In this project, a two-storey building is realised with 3DGS slab units in a structural scheme.
